Having pretty much resigned myself to having to rent a bike in the US, I thought I’d have one last shot at looking for insurance. And I’m so glad that I did, for Google turned up a diamond!
Motorcycle Express specialise in transporting motorbikes and offering temporary insurance to American bikers bringing their bikes to Europe and vice versa.
Their temporary insurance looked ideal – I could buy a bike after all. That is until I read the small print – I needed to submit the application 15 days before the requested effective date. I figured it might take up to a week to find and buy a suitable bike, and I really couldn’t afford to spend the best part of a month on this and getting the insurance processed.
But then I noticed that they could also arrange to air freight bikes from the UK to the US – and they had an online quote tool. To fly the bike from Glasgow to Chicago and back would cost $4590. Now that was a lot better than the $10,000 rental costs. This was definitely a new option.
